Some facts about Diabetes
According to estimates by National Institute of Diabetes and
digestive and kidney diseases, there were around 20.8 million
people (7% of the US population) with diabetes in 2005. Out of
these, around 14.6 million were diagnosed and rest was
undiagnosed.
Roughly 9.6% (20.6 million) of all the people in the age group of 20
years and above in US have diabetes and this figure goes up to
20.9% (10.3 million) for people above 60 years.
Out of the total population with diabetes in the age group of
20 years
or older, around 10.9 million are men and 9.7 million are women.
Some 176,500 people aged 20 years or younger are reported to be
having diabetes which represents 0.22% of all people in this age group. Studies
suggest that type 2 diabetes, although still rare, is being diagnosed more frequently
in children and adolescents, particularly in American Indians, African Americans,
and Hispanic/Latino Americans.
